Hough End Development in manchester

Manchester City Council with partners will underake a major capital investment to transform Hough End Site into a sustainable, high-quality sport and leisure facilities for the benefit of Manchester residents.

Emerging facilities include new 3G Football Pitches and a two-storey extension to the existing Hough End Leisure Centre which will accommodate changing facilities, include a community room, education space, cafe facilities and health and fitness space to better service sport and leisure users on site.

Sustainability is at the heart of the project, with improvements designed to fit in with the council's drive to cut carbon emissions. All  wokring towards making Manchester a healthy, green, socially just city where everyone can thrive. With a target to become a zero carbon city by 2038 at the latest, 12 years ahead of the Government’s target for the UK of 2050.

The Centre will incorporate new green technologies to set the building on a path to decarbonisation, and externally, nature-based solutions have been at the forefront of the design approach to include new 3G pitches with organic infill, a new sustainable urban drainage system and enhanced cycle and electric vehicle parking to promote sustainable travel to the site.

COMPLETION OF PHASE 1

Just two months into the new football season and we are absolutely thrilled to see the broad range of local community clubs and groups benefiting from Hough End 3G Football Turf pitches, following the completion of phase one of Hough End development project.

The site is unmatched and provides a real community hub for grassroots football and sport activities, 7-days a week all year round. The buzz and vibrancy here from leagues and clubs is exciting to see and hear a whole range of local players, all ages and abilities, using both the grass and 3G pitches.

As part of the project, continued annual improvements will be made to the grass playing fields, to enhance the capacity of the pitches for club training, junior and adult match play and recreational programmes and activities too. The pitches are now a mixture of 11 a side, junior along with cricket wicket astro.

The new fenced and floodlit 3G pitches have been installed with a nature-based solution as part of the City’s overall sustainability commitment and criteria, along with a new sustainable urban drainage system.  Hough End is the first nationally funded cork infill 3G facilities and is recognised as a step change in delivering sustainable projects.

Since reopening, we are thrilled that the pitches have hosted players and teams from Didsbury High School, MMU Football, Manchester Laces, Northenden FC, Fletcher Moss Rangers, Gregorian Stockport, East Manchester Junior Football League, Manchester Youth Super League, Foxes Touch Rugby, Community Sports Vision, Chorlton High School South, Hough End Griffins, St Johns Chorlton, Youth on Solid Ground and Hough End Model Airplane Flying Club.

Booking enquiries are live on www.playfootball.net website, visit if you’re interested in playing on and experiencing the quality of our pitches and playing alongside the existing groups and teams.

The pitch improvements will help to increase participation in football and strengthen local affiliated football teams, as well as benefiting nearby schools, universities and clubs who use the facility to enjoy their sport, physical activity and to help all move more.

Phase 2 of the project, which will see the opening of the extension to Hough End Leisure Centre, is on target for completion in Spring 2024.

Hough End Scheme is being developed with sustainability at its heart as well as enhancing sporting provision and active lifestyles for local people. We will be providing cycle and electric vehicle parking to promote sustainable travel and introducing green technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of the extension. The 3G Football Pitches will be designed with an organic turf system infilled with natural cork granules.

Suds and Tree Planting
While some existing tree cover is to be removed, this will be compensated by introducing a mix of ornamental and native species including semi-mature trees. The car park will also incorporate a sustainable urban drainage system.

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Air source heat pumps obtain heat from outdoor air, and from the heat extracted from water vapour in the air. Many air source heat pumps are reversible units, capable of both heating and cooling buildings.

Solar / Photovoltaic Panels (PV)
Solar or PV panels convert the sun’s energy into electricity, providing a renewable source of electricity which can be used to power buildings. Solar panels are made from layers of semi-conducting material, which create a flow of electricity when light shines on the material. They do not need direct sunlight to produce electricity, although the brighter the sunlight, the more electricity is generated. Solar panels increase the generation of renewable electricity, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. They have often been installed alongside heat pumps, to provide a renewable source of electricity to power them.

We are keen to maximise the economic, social, and environmental benefits to the local area as a whole during our time on site and plan to engage the labour force and community on this project as much as possible.
